CI MSA wins 2nd Place at MAST Expo!

Over the past 3 ½ weeks the 11th grade Marine Science Academy class has been hard at work building SeaGlide Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). The ultimate goal of which is to build a ‘robot’ that can glide underwater in a straight line across a body of water. The kits were provided by Ventura County Office of Education and the Navy (NAVFAC/SPAWAR).

Our class was invited to attend the 6th Annual MAST Expo at The Port of Hueneme and our #1 AUV was invited to compete in the Inaugural SeaGlide Competition. We brought our top 3 AUVs. These teams had a bit of time to test their AUVs in the large tank at the port before we narrowed it down to our final competitor. We competed against Santa Paula HS, Oxnard HS, Colina MS, and Santa Susana HS. Our team took 2nd Place and I am so proud of these young ladies for persevering and bringing home a trophy.

Congratulations to Jennifer Martinez, Faviola Martinez, and Marisela Gonzalez for winning 2nd Place! Congratulations also go out to Javier Rojas, Edgar Aguilar, Paul Basa Alfredo Tapia, Denise Reyes, Leo Melgoza for making it into the final 3!

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is currently hosting the 26th annual art exhibition, which showcases student artwork from all the sites in the Oxnard Union High School District. The show will be on display for the rest of April for those who missed the opening reception.

Every school in the OUHSD is allowed to submits a certain amount of art pieces to be exhibited. Once all the schools’ submissions have reached the museum, a local artist judges the artwork from each of the five categories and then recommends awards.

On Tuesday April 9th during the opening reception and award ceremony, Channel Islands student artists were presented with a first-place, a third-place, and three honorable mention awards. Here is a list of all the students whose artwork is representing The Islands at this year’s exhibition:

Roberto Perez (1st place, digital photography category) Luis Arrevalo (3rd place, multimedia category) Trinity Garcia (honorable mention, sculpture category) Lynn Abagatnan (2 honorable mentions, both in drawing category) Elizabeth Lopez Ana Martinez Alejandra Orozco Halilah Rabaut

Please congratulate any of these student artists when you see them. It is an honor just to be chosen to show in this district-wide exhibit, and it is exceptional when students receive awards. These students proudly represent the CIHS art department as well as our Raider family.
