School resource officer Mr. Ryan Carey, school psychologist Ms. Amelia Gaxiola and school nurse Ms. Stacie Lueg all took time out of their busy schedules to talk to AVID-3 students this past week about their respective career fields. They talked about what led them into their careers, discussed the various aspects of their jobs, and fielded questions from the students, who are in the midst of a career research project. Officer Carey reported that two of the AVID students came to see him for applications to the Oxnard Police Explorers program after his visit.
On Wednesday, the AVID Seniors went on a college campus tour to Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA. The students had a great time being exposed to a new campus and seeing what Westmont had to offer. The students were given a thorough tour that encouraged some of our current seniors to think about applying after the campus tour.
This past weekend our Robotics Team, the RoboRaiders, competed in the Ventura Regional from Thursday through Saturday. We were able to rank 38th overall, surpassing our sister team from Hueneme (H.A.R.D). The kids worked tirelessly to build their robot and fix it between matches. The most remarkable aspect of this competition, other than getting our robot to run, was the team spirit that developed as our departing veteran members passed down their knowledge to our newest members. We were even lucky enough to have four of our alumni members (all but one of the original team) stop by to cheer and help out the tea and help out the team.
