Brion Johnson, CIHS class of 2008, recently visited the Islands to talk to Mr. John Grennan’s AVID-3 class. Johnson was a band member in his CI days, and he also played the title role of Othello in the CI Drama Club’s production of the Shakespeare play. Now Johnson is a certified free-lance political consultant for the U.S. Government. He travels around the country, helping familiarize foreign leaders and diplomats with the U.S. political system and business culture. The job even took him to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, earlier this year. Johnson told the students about his educational journey that started at Ventura College, went to Bowie State in Maryland, and then back to California, where he earned his degree in International Relations at Sacramento State University. He went on to earn his master’s degree in International Relations from San Francisco State University. As part of his master’s program, Johnson studied abroad in Italy. Along the way, Johnson worked several resume-building internships, including one for U.S. Congresswoman Doris Matsui and another at the British Consulate in San Francisco.
Mock Trial
The Mock Trial team is incredibly grateful to Ms. Andrea Goodman and Don Lee Farms for sponsoring us this year with an incredibly generous donation of $1400.00. This donation will help the team with transportation to competitions, team shirts, and banquet costs. No benefit was bestowed upon these wonderful people in exchange for this contribution other than the joy of giving to our wonderful Raider team. Mrs. Sajor was instrumental in helping bring Ms. Goodman and Don Lee Farms and our Mock Team together, many thanks to them all. (Here is the team during 0 period holding up the check)
On Wednesday, November 29, Kelvin Santacruz was awarded the Bronze Scholarship of $2500.00 by the Hispanic Heritage Youth. As stated on their site, students are selected based on their academic standing, their letter of recommendation from a coach or teacher, their community involvement and their commitment to being role models in inspiring others and shatter negative stereotypes. Youth Awardees can receive grants for education or community projects to encourage social innovation and entrepreneurship. In addition, Kelvin is in the running to go on to be selected as the National Youth Award recipient in his category. There are over 10,000 applicants, and I can’t think of a more deserving student.
