CIHS hosts First Day of the Dead Community Celebration

On Thursday, November 2nd we held our First Day of the Dead Community Celebration at Channel Island High School. Many families, staff, and students attended the event. The student altars, ballet folklorico, and aztec dancing helped in creating cultural awareness at our school. Overall, the evening was a success! The event created an inclusive and exciting environment, which brought everyone together. A special thanks goes to The AMAZING Spanish Club, students in Spanish classes, Spanish teachers, Administrators, Teachers, Campus Supervisors, Secretaries, and everyone who attended.

CI Cross Country competed in the Ventura County Championships at Lake Casitas Last Friday. Under warm dry conditions reaching upper 80’s which is not ideal for racing.  Several runners from other schools went down due to heat but CI’s morning practices at 6:15am last week’s during the heat wave paid off.  Freshmen boys had their best finish ever, placing 4th overall led by Pedro Calderon (wearing number 123) who won the freshmen race.  Varsity boys had the best finish at this meet since 1995 placing 4th overall with Thousand oaks, Simi Valley, and Moorpark ahead.   Senior, Ricardo Torres took home the individual title as County Champion.  This is the first time in CI XC history where we had any individual champions.

Yesterday CI hosted the PVL Cross Country Championships at College Park.  It was the greatest finish CI has ever experienced starting with our JV boys taking the top 10 spots.  No school in XC PVL history has ever dominated in that fashion.  JV boys were led by JR Donaldo Martinez and freshmen Pedro Calderon.   Varsity boys won their 1st league title since 1990 led by now 3 time league champion and new course record holder senior Ricardo Torres.  Ricardo finished in 14:59 which is sub 5 minutes mile pace for 3 miles; outstanding!  Alejandro Cerero took 3rd, Lucio Rivas 4th, Michael Suarez 6th, Jared Gomez 11th, Yosuan Sosa 12th, and Daniel Hernandez  15th.  On the girls side JV girls finished 2nd led by Evelyn Bermudez in 3rd and Alejandra Audelo in 9th.  Varsity girl fought hard and took 4th led by Ana Barbosa in 13th and Lizbet Alvarez in 14th.
Varsity boys will continue to CIF Prelims next Saturday.
