Early Academic Outreach Program
Senior Action Plan presentations took place on September 22 & 25, 2017, EAOP College Site Coordinators and CIHS counselors presented to all seniors in their Economics or Am. Government class. In the presentation, we discussed the benefits of achieving higher education. Also, the students were reminded of their expectations to achieve a high school diploma. The presentation focused on the 4 systems of higher education: admission requirements, SAT/ACT registration information, application requirements and deadlines. Special THANKS to all the teachers in the Social Science Department for making this possible.
Time Management Workshop took place on Saturday, September 30, 2017. EAOP College Site Coordinator Griselda Sanchez, provided senior students with a workshop on Time Management. In the workshop students learned different strategies they can use to help them stay on track with all their different responsibilities. One of the activities was for the students to keep track of all the things they do in week to assess where their time is going to be able to determine the appropriate plan of action.
Senior Academic Recognitions took place from 10/02 to 10/05. The Early Academic Outreach Program recognized 205 seniors for their academic accomplishments. The students recognized are on track on their A-G requirements and have a GPA that allows them to apply to a UC and/or a CSU. The students received a certificate of academic recognition and essential information regarding their specific higher education options.
Common App Application Workshop took place on Thursday, October 5, 2017. EAOP College Site Coordinator Griselda Sanchez, provided a workshop to students on how to complete the application for private institutions. The students also received assistance on how to connect their Common APP to Naviance.
Senior College Night took place on Thursday, October 5, 2017. CIHS parents and students received lots of valuable information regarding college. The parents received information regarding the four systems of higher education, application process and deadlines to apply. College representative from CLU, Oxnard College, CSU Channel Islands and UC Santa Barbara were present to provide our parents with the information.
How to write a College Essay or Response workshop, October 9, 10 & 12 in Senior English classes. EAOP Academic Services Coordinator, Luis Melgoza, presented to Seniors on how to write an essay for a college or scholarship application. Students received insight on what colleges look for in the essay for example, the different writing styles.
UC Application Workshop took place on Thursday, October 12, 2017. EAOP College Site Coordinator Griselda Sanchez, provided a workshop for students on how to complete the UC application.
UC Achieve took place on Friday, October 13, 2017. Early Academic Outreach Program hosted a conference at UCSB of over 200 students, 47 students were from CI. The purpose of the conference was for students to become more familiar with the UC system.
“I’m Going to College” took place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. EAOP College Site Coordinator, Griselda Sanchez, coordinated the workshops for all seniors to received assistance in the completion of their CSU or Community College application. Special thanks to all CI Counselors, Oxnard College, CSUCI University Culture and CLU Trio program for all assistance and support.

On Friday the 13th CSF stayed after school to clean the campus and enjoy a Pizza dinner! Fun was had by all.

The Isle File’s Vanessa Gonzalez, a senior, had her column “The Voice of a CI Dreamer” published in the Ventura County Star. It ran on the Opinion page on Sunday, Oct. 8.
Marine Science Academy (MSA)
Marine Science Academy senior students went on a fieldtrip Thursday to California State University Channel Islands and the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology (a.k.a Bird Museum of Camarillo). Students learned what it takes to get in to CSUCI and toured the campus to see the residence halls, recreation facilities, food halls, and other facilities. At the Bird Museum we had the pleasure of viewing the largest collection of birds, eggs, and nests in the world. Students learned about the environmental effects of pesticides and other contaminants on the birds, eggs, and their nests. They also learned about internship, college, and futur career opportunities.
Last Thursday Varsity Boys XC took first place in the 2nd league meet of the season led by Ricardo Torres who has won the last two PVL titles. Boy’s JV once again won by a landslide led by Donaldo Martinez who took 1st. Varsity Girls moved up to 3rd place led by Lizbet Alvarez who took 4th overall. JV Boy’s are the defending league champs and Varsity Boys are on their way to winning the 1st league title since 1990. If varsity Girls pull off another great race they will also be going to CIF prelims for the 4th consecutive year. League Finals will be November 2nd here at home Oxnard College Park.
